Henderson Drops Career-High 19 Points in Women's Basketball's 68-58 Loss at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore standout Kaliah Henderson poured in a career-high 19 points to record her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring game in the Saint Joseph's women's basketball squad's 68-58 road loss at Richmond on Friday afternoon, a game that was rescheduled from Thursday, February 18 due to inclement weather down in the Richmond area. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-8 overall (3-8 A-10) while the Spiders improve to 11-6 overall (8-4 A-10).

Henderson shot 8-of-16 from the field and 3-of-4 from the stripe to go with a season-high nine rebounds, just two shy of her career high (11 vs. George Mason last year). The sophomore guard also dished out three assists in 32 minutes of play.

Graduate student guard Alexis Santarelli added 11 points while sophomore forward Gabby Smalls went for seven points and a team-high 12 rebounds in her first start of the year.

Trailing by just two, 60-58, with 2:42 remaining in regulation, the Hawks went 0-of-7 from the field in the final 2:06 while the Spiders hit a three (:50) and went 5-of-6 from the stripe to close the game with the 10-point advantage.

How It Happened
Q1 –
After Richmond jumped out to a 13-6 advantage through the opening 6:57 of play, Saint Joseph's closed the first quarter on a 9-3 run to close its deficit to one point, 16-15. Junior guard Katie Jekot hit a three (2:04) to kick off the run before Smalls (2-of-2 FT) and Henderson (lay-up) combined for four points within 13 seconds to bring the score 14-13, in favor of Richmond, with 1:11 to play. The Spiders converted a pair of free throws (:38) to extend their lead back out to three, but graduate student guard Alayna Gribble hit a jumper in the paint with 11 seconds to go to close SJU's deficit to one. Jekot (five), Henderson (four) and Smalls (four) combined for 13 of SJU's 15 first-quarter points.

Q2 – Richmond shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the field and held Saint Joseph's to just 27.3 percent (3-of-11) plus six turnovers in the second quarter to extend their lead by six, 34-28, by the halftime break. The Hawks tied the score on four different occasions and went ahead twice, but trailing 27-25 with 3:18 to play, the Spiders closed the quarter on a 9-1 run. Santarelli was big for the Hawks with six of SJU's 13 second-quarter points.

Q3 – Despite combining to shoot 6-of-27 from the field in the third quarter, both teams got to the line at least 12 times in the third; the Hawks saw 11 of their 17 third-quarter points come from the stripe. Trailing by seven, 45-38, at the 3:13 mark, the Hawks went on an 8-2 run on four consecutive free throws from Santarelli (3:00) and Smalls (2:40), a Santarelli lay-up (2:09), and Gribble free throws (1:18) to close to within two, but a three from Richmond's Kate Kimkiewicz gave the Spiders a five-point edge entering the final quarter.
