Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls to Delaware, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA – Josh Hesson's goal in the 24th minute would be all the Blue Hens needed as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad fell to Delaware, 1-0, in non-conference action at Sweeney Field on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-3 while the Blue Hens improve to 1-0 with their season-opening win.

The scoring play initially began on a shot from Delaware's Forster Adajo, whose shot hit the cross bar and bounced back into play. The ball got shuffled around in front of SJU's goal before finding the foot of Hesson, who fired in the eventual match-winner.

The Hawks put on the offensive pressure in the final 25 minutes, forcing Blue Hens netminder Renan Thomazo into three saves.

Saint Joseph's sophomore midfielder James Fletcher landed SJU's first shot on goal in the 66th minute before the Hawks saw one of their best scoring opportunities unfold in the 75th minute, as senior defender David Grana sent in a perfect cross to Fletcher, positioned on the left side of the box, but Fletcher headed the attempt just left of the goal.

Grana made things happen in the 87th minute as well, as he rocketed off a shot that was blocked and came back into play toward senior midfielder Alan Kahlenbeck. Captain Kahlenbeck fired off a kick that had the potential to be the late equalizer, but Thomazo made a kick save to keep the Hawks off the board.

The Crimson and Gray earned one more scoring opportunity in the 89th minute off of a scrum in front of Delaware's net following a corner kick from the foot of freshman midfielder Nemo Philipp, but sophomore defender Alex Hartmann's shot would find the hands of Thomazo.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Allan (1-2) made one save on the night, stopping a shot from Pedro Barbolla in the 12th minute.
