Baseball Falls to UConn in Home Opener, 6-4

MERION STATION, Pa. – A four-run fourth inning was the turning point as the Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to UConn, 6-4, in its home opener at Smithson Field on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (4-1) got on the board first as Luca Trigiani led off the bottom of the second with a double and came around to score on a pair of wild pitches.

• The visitors went ahead in the fourth as a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Christian Fedko, who cleared the bases with a three-run double.  Two batters later, he came in to score on a groundout by Ciaran Devenney to make it a 4-0 game.

• UConn (5-10) extended the lead in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Kevin Ferrer.

• The Hawks clawed back into the game in the bottom half of the inning.  A walk to Brendan Hueth was sandwiched between infield singles by Jake Artz and Andrew Cossetti to load the bases for Nate Thomas.  Thomas then singled to right field to plate Artz and Hueth; the ball skipped past the fielder and went all the way to the fence, bringing home Cossetti and moving Thomas all the way to third.  Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, he would be stranded there by UConn starter Ben Casparius.

• Kyler Fedko added an RBI single in the top of the seventh to push the Huskies lead back to a pair.  The Hawks would get the tying run to the plate in each of the game's final three innings, but the Huskies held on for the win.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Casparius allowed four runs, three of them earned, on six hits and two walks in six and two-thirds innings to earn the win.  He also struck out 11 as he improved to 2-2.  Caleb Wurster notched his first save of the season, retiring both batters he faced to finish off the game.

• Ian McCole fell to 0-1 after allowing five runs on six hits in six innings.  He fanned five while walking one.
