PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore defender
Alex Hartmann headed in his first collegiate goal just before the halftime break, but the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad ultimately fell to UMass, 2-1, in Atlantic 10 action on Sweeney Field on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 1-5 overall (0-2 A-10) while the Minutemen improve to 6-1-1 (2-1-1 A-10).
Saint Joseph's, again limited in personnel for Saturday's match, outshot UMass 16-11, which included a second half in which the Hawks fired off 11 shots compared to the Minutemen's two shot attempts. Junior defender
Johnny Cunningham took a team-high five shots, landing two on goal, while freshman midfielder
Nemo Philipp landed three shots on goal in four attempts.
Saint Joseph's freshman goalkeeper
Luis Ludosan (0-3, 0-2 A-10) made two first-half saves in the full 60:00.
How It Happened:
• Alec Hughes put UMass on the board in the 23rd minute, finishing a header on a feed from Ben Shepherd.
• Hughes scored again just over nine minutes later on assists from Shepherd and Tyler Mann; Hughes found himself open in the front of the box for his second goal of the match.
• With time expiring in the first half, Philipp launched a perfect ball in off a corner kick, and Hartmann headed it past UMass goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin for SJU's first goal in its last four matches. The assist marks the first point of Philipp's collegiate career, while the goal also marked Hartmann's first collegiate points.
• Philipp (48') and Cunningham (49') opened the second half with offensive pressure to force Dorchin into a pair of saves and the Crimson and Gray fired off a trio of shots on goal late in the half, courtesy redshirt freshman midfielder
Alex Hood (78'), Cunningham (80'), and Philipp (81'); Dorchin made an outstanding save on Philipp's shot to keep the rookie's potential equalizer off the scoreboard.
• Sophomore midfielder
Chris Hunt fired off what looked to be the equalizer in the 86th minute, but his shot just missed wide right for SJU's final offensive opportunity.
