The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team continued racing against strong opponents as the Hawks took on UConn, #10 Rutgers and George Washington this weekend.
"We are proud of our efforts and finishes, and we got so much experience out of this weekend," said head coach
Gerry Quinlan. "Racing in varying conditions, and two races within a short turn around, will help us to get ready for A-10s and facing very tough opponents. We learn so much from days like today; that's what March is all about."
How it Happened
Versus UConn and #10 Rutgers
• Conditions were perfect for racing in the early races, as the Hawks hosted UConn and #10 Rutgers on the Schuylkill River.
• The Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8 squared off against the Huskies, and both Saint Joseph's boats recorded solid open-water wins.
• The Varsity 4 dropped a hard-fought race against #10 Rutgers 3V4 and 4V4 to cap the morning.
• "It's great to get some wins against a very good opponent in UConn," said Quinlan. "I am really happy for our 2V8, which recorded its first win after two narrow losses the past two weeks with unbelievable efforts."
Versus George Washington
• Conditions changed considerably with a head wind building to 10 miles per hour, and gusting to 15 miles per hour, making the course slow and choppy.
• The Varsity 8 had a strong race and held connection all the way to the finish line.Â
• The Varsity 8 crew made some strong moves, but just couldn't get the boat ahead of the Colonials.Â
• "The Varsity 8 had a strong race and didn't let them go, we slugged it out, but just needed to be a little sharper," Quinlan said.
• The 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 had a tough go racing into the conditions.Â
• "This was the most difficult conditions these young crews have faced on a race day and it was a great learning experience," said Quinlan. "We gave great effort for all 2000m, George Washington just handled the conditions better."
