#19 Field Hockey Suffers Shootout Heartbreak

MERION STATION, Pa. – The 19th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell in a shootout on Saturday afternoon as Lock Haven came away with a 1-0 victory at Ellen Ryan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Lock Haven (3-1 overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10) had the better of the chances in the first half, outshooting the Hawks 4-1 and earning five penalty corners to just one for the hosts.

• Saint Joseph's (3-2 overall, 2-1 Atlantic 10) ratcheted up the pressure in the third quarter, and then took it to another level in the fourth.  The Hawks had a golden opportunity at a winner in the last few minutes of regulation, but consecutive shots off the post kept the game scoreless.

• SJU earned a penalty corner with no time on the clock, and the ensuing effort barely missed being tipped in for the winner, sending the game to overtime.

• Goalkeeper Robin Bleekemolen came up big for the Hawks in the first extra frame by making a pair of saves, including one on a corner opportunity.  In the second overtime, it was LHU's Joaquina Orlandini's turn, as her diving stop on a shot by Celeste Smits kept things tied with just over five minutes to play.

• In the shootout, the Bald Eagles went first, and the first three attempts were converted to give the guests a 2-1 edge.  Bleekemolen and Orlandini then combined to stop the final seven shootout attempt, which gave the visitors the win.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• For the game, the Hawks outshot the Bald Eagles 25-6, including 18-0 in the second half.  The Hawks earned 19 corners to six for the guests, with an 18-1 advantage over the second half and overtime.

• Bleekemolen made three saves on the day, while Orlandini made six, including four in the second overtime.  Both keepers were credited with a shutout.

• The loss snaps a 28-game winning streak for Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament play.  The Hawks last fell to a league foe in a 1-0 defeat at Richmond in October 2017.  SJU's last home defeat against Atlantic 10 competition came in the Atlantic 10 semifinals against UMass at Ellen Ryan Field in November 2015.

UP NEXT
The Hawk will host UMass in their regular season finale, a critical Atlantic 10 matchup, next Saturday.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
