Third Varsity 8 Picks Up Wins For Men's Rowing At Kerr Cup

4/18/2021 11:30:00 AM

The Saint Joseph's Third Varsity 8 posted wins against Temple and Drexel as the Hawks' men's rowing team competed at the Kerr Cup on Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

"This year's Kerr Cup was run in a match race format of two flights instead of heats and finals," said Saint Joseph's Head Coach Mike Irwin. "It had all the familiar Philadelphia faces - Penn, Temple, Drexel - and it was our first time getting a handle on the different levels of local speed."

How It Happened
• The Third Varsity 8 of C- David Knapp, 8-Noah Pingul, 7-Michael Fedele, 6-William Darling, 5-Gavin O'Connor, 4-Will Sims, 3-Cameron McNeill, 2-Owen Lyons, 1-Harris Beckmeyer opened the day with a victory over Temple's Third Varsity Heavyweight 8, finishing the course in a time of 6:05.6.
• Saint Joseph's Third Varsity 8 finished the day besting Drexel with a time of 6:03.7.
• The Hawks' Second Varsity 8 of C-Alexander Mayo, 8-Aaron Tully, 7-David Gee, 6-Ed Lemanowicz, 5-Collin Petersen, 4-Eamon Coyne, 3-Rob Dougherty, 2-Jacob Vucinaj, 1-Thomas Rigali opened the day with a final time of 5:53.4 in their heat.
• In the afternoon, the Second Varsity 8 navigated the course in a time of 6:04.5.
• Saint Joseph's Varsity 8 of C-John Carluccio, 8-Devin Swech, 7-Kjel Schlemmer, 6-Max Bernstein, 5-Slam Dunkley, 4-Collin Seabrook, 3-Ian Gallagher, 2-Jack Yeager, 1-William Altier finished the course in a time of 6:00.0 in the morning and posted a time of 6:00.2 in the afternoon.
• "Our 3V had the best finishes fo the day taking home wins against Temple and Drexel. The 2V had a good week of practice, but couldn't quite put it all together on race day. The 1V was inconsistent all week and has to keep working through early season struggles. We talked about the analogy of a basketball player fighting through a shooting slump - just keep taking shots. As long as our work ethic stays high, all the boats will round into peak form in May," said Irwin. "We look forward to hosting Princeton and George Washington this coming weekend. It's going to be another match race format in two flights. Our schedule strength is higher than any of my years on Hawk Hill. It is going to be exciting heading to the line every weekend as we prepare for the IRA National Championship!"
