PITTSBURGH, Pa. –
Stephanie Kelly's goal in the last two minutes of the second half broke a tie and led the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Duquesne at Rooney Field on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (9-5 overall, 6-1 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a hot start, potting five goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game.Â
Lauren Figura scored three times during the stretch, with
Sophia Kolkka and
Sam McGee tallying as well.
• The Hawks ran the lead up to 7-0 on Figura's fourth of the day and Kelly's first before the hosts finally found the net with 6:12 to go in the half.
• Duquesne (4-4 overall, 3-4 Atlantic 10) scored three of the last four goals of the first half and then turned things around in the second half. After two quick goals by the Dukes, Figura extended the lead to 9-5 with just over 20 minutes to play, but the Dukes would eventually tie things up at nine with 4:22 on the clock.
• Kelly scored what would turn out to be the game-winner with 1:53 on the clock to put the Hawks ahead. SJU then caused a pair of late Duquesne turnovers to seal the win.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Figura notched her third consecutive game with at least five goals.
• Kelly finished with three goals and five assists for eight points, one shy of her season-high.
•
Melissa Semkiw made 11 saves for the Hawks, while Mady Piersielak made eight for Duquesne.
• Kolkka caused five turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls, while Pash added five draws and three caused turnovers.
• Duquesne held a 29-24 advantage in shots and a 14-7 edge in draw controls.
UP NEXT
The Hawks will wrap up the regular season against #24 UMass at Sweeney Field on Sunday. After the game, the Hawks will honor their 2020 and 2021 senior classes in the annual Senior Day ceremony.
