MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team split a pair of games with Fordham on Saturday afternoon at Smithson Field.
In the opener, Matt Mikulski struck out 15 to lead the Rams to a 3-1 win, while in the nightcap, the Hawks used a seven-run second inning to fuel an 11-1 rout of the visitors.
GAME 1: Fordham 3, Saint Joseph's 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks had some base runners early but it was Fordham (17-12 overall, 4-3 Atlantic 10) that got on the board first, plating a pair of two-out runs in the top of the third. The Rams added to the lead with a singleton in the top of the sixth.
•
Andrew Cossetti got the run back in the bottom of the inning with a no-doubt home run to left, ending Mikulski's 26-inning shutout streak, but that would be all for the Hawks in the opener.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Mikulski improved to 6-0 on the year after allowing one run on two hits while walking three and fanning 15 in a seven-inning complete game effort.
Luke Zimmerman took the hard-luck loss for the Hawks, allowing three runs on six hits in six and a third innings.
• Fordham's C.J. Vasquez was the only player on either team with a multi-hit game; he went 3-for-4.
GAME 2: Saint Joseph's 11, Fordham 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (13-9 overall, 8-3 Atlantic 10) wasted no time erasing the previous game from memory as Cossetti and
Nate Thomas hit consecutive two-out doubles to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
• The Rams tied the scored in the top half of the frame, but the Hawks put this one away early with a seven-run second.
Jake Artz drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Hawks on top before
Brendan Hueth singled home a run to double the lead. Cossetti followed with an RBI single of his own before a wild pitch scored Artz and made it a 5-1 game.
• Thomas followed with a home run out to right to extend the Crimson and Gray's lead to 8-1.
• Artz would score on another wild pitch in the third before Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to extend the margin to 10-1. Artz then singled with two outs in the fourth to score
Brian Vance with what turned out to be the game's final run.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE

Lucas Rollins who went the distance, scattering six hits and allowing one run while striking out four to improve to 2-1 for SJU. Garrett Crowley was tagged with the loss after he was charged with eight runs on six hits while recording just four outs.
• Cossetti led the way with a 3-for-4 performance while Thomas drove in five runs; four different Hawks scored two runs apiece, while five recorded multi-hit outings.
