RICHMOND, Va. – The Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell to #18 VCU, 2-0, in the Atlantic 10 championship game at Cary Street Field on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (5-3) had the only shot of a cagey opening quarter for both teams, and also earned the only corner of the opening 15 minutes.
• Neither team scored in the second quarter as things opened up a bit, but it was more of the same through the third.
• VCU (9-0) struck just less than two minutes into the fourth as Lonica McKinney put home her own rebound to give the Rams the lead.
• With the Hawk net empty in favor of an extra field player, Georgia Carr-Brown re-directed a long pass with 2:16 to play to seal it.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• VCU held a 9-7 advantage in shots, while SJU was awarded the only three corners in the game.
•
Robin Bleekemolen made five saves for the Hawks, while Sasha Elliott made five for the Rams.
• Today's game was the fifth consecutive championship game appearance for the Hawks; prior to winning the last three championships, the Hawks fell to UMass in 2016, also at Cary Street Field.
• The championship is the first A-10 title for VCU.
• Bleekemolen was named to the All-Championship team, joined by
Sara Hayes,
Anna Miller, and
Emily Peters. Elliott was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player.
