Men's Rowing Competes Against Princeton and George Washington In Match Races

4/25/2021 11:45:00 AM

The Saint Joseph's men's rowing team completed a challenging weekend of rowing as the Hawks took on Princeton and George Washington on the Schuylkill River.

"This was our toughest set of match races this season and it was exciting to watch each boat rise to the challenge. Results in a match race are binary - win or lose - but the growth from one race to the next is the most important piece of information," said head coach Mike Irwin. "We learned things about our capacity racing Princeton in round one that absolutely helped us against George Washington in round two. It has been difficult for many teams to travel this spring and it was great to have two Eastern Sprint teams in Philadelphia for a Saturday afternoon!"

How It Happened
• Against Princeton, Saint Joseph's Varsity 8 of C-John Carluccio, 8-Ed Lemanowicz, 7-Kjel Schlemmer, 6-Devin Swech, 5-Slam Dunkley, 4-Collin Seabrook, 3-William Altier, 2-Max Bernstein, 1-David Gee completed the course in 6:19.2.
• The 2nd Varsity 8 of C-David Knapp, 8-Aaron Tully, 7-Rob Dougherty, 6-Nick Coppola, 5-Collin Petersen, 4-Eamon Coyne, 3-Ian Gallagher, 2-Jacob Vucinaj, 1-Thomas Rigali turned in a time of 6:35.5 against Princeton.
• In a tight race, the Saint Joseph's 3rd Varsity 8 of C-Ryan Flaherty, 8-Noah Pingul, 7-Michael Fedele, 6-Jack Yeager, 5-Gavin O'Connor, 4-Will Sims, 3-Cameron McNeill, 2-Owen Lyons, 1-Harris Beckmeyer was edged by the Tigers, 6:12.1 to 6:14.5.
• Versus George Washington, the Varsity 8 posted a time of 6:13.0, just off the pace of the Colonials.
• The 2nd Varsity 8 completed the course in a time of 6:43.3 against the George Washington.
• The Hawks' 3rd Varsity 8 bested the Colonials by open water in a time of 6:35.2.
• "We need to keep evolving as we head into the month of May. It's now championship season with the Bergen Cup - the City of Philadelphia Championship, the Dad Vail, and the IRA National Championship," Irwin said. "The next five weeks are going to be intense on the water but the moments created in May are the ones that fuel oarsmen to train and compete all year long!"
