Men's Tennis Drops Tight Match at Carnegie Mellon, 4-3

4/3/2021 12:35:00 AM

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team fell to Carnegie Mellon in a nailbiter on Friday night, going down by a 4-3 score indoors at the Alpha Tennis Club.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (5-3) won the doubles point for an early lead.  Nickolas Frisk and Francesco Mowrey were 6-1 winners in the second flight before Eshan Kanetkar and Nathan Perrone won the first flight, 7-5, to clinch the point.

• Perrone then doubled the margin to kick off singles play, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win in the first flight.

• Carnegie Mellon (6-1), the 15th-ranked team in Division III, turned the match in its favor with wins in the second, third, and fourth flights to go ahead 3-2.

• Johnnie Massart drew the Hawks level in the fifth flight, rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 win, but the Tartans clinched the win in a supertiebreaker in the sixth flight.

HAWK TALK
"It was not a good match for us," assistant coach Marc Pibernat said.  "When three our of six singles players do not show up to actually compete and do everything they can to win, this is what happens.  We competed with half of the lineup today, and it's obvious that you can't win like that.  It's frustrating as a coach, but also must be frustrating for the players that actually go out there and fight to see their teammates handing matches away.  Hopefully it is a wake-up call for our conference match we have against Duquesne."

UP NEXT
The Hawks remain in the Steel City for a matchup with Duquesne on Saturday.
