BALTIMORE – Freshman midfielder
Nemo Philipp scored twice to lead the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad to a 2-1 road win over UMBC in non-conference action at Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday evening. With their second road win in the last four days, the Hawks improve to 3-5 overall.
"I was very pleased with the quality of play today," said head coach
Don D'Ambra following the win. "Defensively, we made it very difficult for them to get any good attempts at the goal, and our back line was solid the entire time. Offensively, we had some excellent attacks and created two great goals by Nemo.
James Fletcher was extremely active in the midfield and very creative with his passing while Nemo was very composed with his scoring attempts."
"It was an unbelievable feeling," added Philipp of scoring his first two collegiate goals in the win. "The team assisted me well on my goals, and I am beyond happy that I scored! The goals and the win show our progress and how hard we have been working."
How It Happened
• Saint Joseph's freshman goalkeeper
Luis Ludosan (2-3) made his first of two saves on the day in the 13th minute to keep the Retrievers off the board.
• In the 17th minute, senior midfielder
Daniel Morales got the ball at the top of the box and drew in a pair of defenders, leaving Philipp open in front of the net. Morales placed a perfect pass in to Philipp, who put away the first goal of his collegiate career.
• Sophomore midfielder
Chris Hunt (28') and Philipp (41') fired off shots on goal, but UMBC goalkeeper Quantrell Jones made a pair of saves to keep the Retrievers within one.
• Ludosan made his second save of the match in the 44th minute to maintain SJU's 1-0 lead at the halftime break.
• Philipp (54') and freshman forward
Mikkel Andersen (59') continued the offensive pressure and forced Jones into another pair of saves.
• Philipp broke through for his second goal of the match - the eventual match-winner - in the 65th minute. On a play initiated by Fletcher, the sophomore midfielder stole the ball halfway between the top of the box and the midfield line and dribbled through two defenders before dishing a pass to Philipp on his right, and Philipp calmly put away SJU's second tally.
• The Retrievers scored in the 81st minute to close their deficit to one goal.
• UMBC's Julian Conze fired off one last hope for the home team with seconds remaining on the scoreboard (90'), but his shot went high.
