Baseball Falls Late to Army West Point, 4-3

MERION STATION, Pa. – An eighth-inning run led Army West Point to a 4-3 victory over the Saint Joseph's baseball team at Smithson Field on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Army (12-11) got on the board in the top of the second on an RBI double by Jeremiah Adams and an RBI single by Derek Berg.

• Brett Callahan cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run into the bullpens in right field.

• Saint Joseph's (5-6) tied the game in the fourth on a two-out single by Ryan Picollo.

• The Black Knights went ahead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Carter Macias, but the Hawks answered in the fifth when Luke Zimmerman hit a first-pitch rocket out to right to make it 3-3.

• In the eighth, Sam Ruta hit a two-out single to score the go-ahead run for West Point.  The Hawks would get the tying run into scoring position with two outs but could not push across the equalizer.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Connley Early tossed the final three innings for Army, allowing a hit and a walk, to earn the win.  Alec Rodriguez took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in an inning and two-thirds.

• Neither starter figured into the decision.  David Owsik allowed two runs on two hits in three innings, while Joel Rubin was charged with two runs on four hits in three and two-thirds.

• Callahan and Zimmerman led the Hawks with two hits apiece; Berg went 3-for-4 to lead the Black Knights.

• Picollo's RBI hit was the first of his collegiate career.
