The Saint Joseph's softball team split its series-opening doubleheader with UMass on Friday as the Hawks took game two, 9-3, after falling 3-1 in the opener at the SJU Softball Field.
Game One
• UMass took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Bella Pantoja scored from third on an infield ground out by Kendra Allen.
• A triple by Caroline Deem scored Amy Smith later in the first to extend the Minutewomen's lead to 2-0.
• Caroline Videtto extended UMass' lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth as she scored from third on a ground out by Pantoja.
• Saint Joseph's cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh as
Erica Lawrence scored on a throwing error by the Minutewomen as they mishandled a ball hit by SJU's
Sarah Ostaszewski.
• The Hawks would get the tying run to second later in the seventh, but the Minutewomen worked out of trouble to secure the win.
Game Two
• A two-run double by Deem gave UMass a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
• Saint Joseph's answered in the bottom of the first as a double by
Caela Abadie scored Ostaszewski to make it 2-1.

Jessica Gaughan followed with a flair to center field that allowed Abadie to score and tie it at 2-2.
• A single up the middle by Ostaszewski gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead as
Nicole Bondoc came around to score in the second.
• UMass answered back to tie it at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on a RBI triple by Jules Shields.
• A six run bottom of the fifth pushed the Hawks ahead for good as
Madison Fife started things off with a solo home run to left field.

Payton Baxter followed a short time later with a two-run home run to extend the Hawks' lead to 6-3.
• A single up the middle by Ostaszewski scored Bondoc and Lawrence to make it 8-3.
• Ostaszewski made it 9-3 as she scored from second on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Abadie.
Inside The Boxscore
• Lawrence was 2-for-3 in the opener with a run scored.

Saige Stutz, who allowed two earned runs on eight hits, moved to 3-3 on the season with the loss in game one.
• Stutz struck out five in 7.0 innings of work.
•
Emily Siler picked up the win in game two as she allowed two earned runs over 7.0 innings, while striking out four to improve to 2-2.
• Ostaszewski and Gaughan each collected three hits in the nightcap.
