KINGSTON, R.I. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team secured a split in its weekend series at Rhode Island on Sunday, topping the Rams, 6-3, at Bill Beck Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (17-17 overall, 11-9 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the top of the first when
Andrew Cossetti launched a titanic home run to left; storms in the area led to the game being delayed immediately after the Hawks went ahead.
• After the resumption of play, Rhode Island (23-23-1 overall, 10-6 Atlantic 10) went ahead on a sacrifice fly by Xavier Vargas and a ground-rule double by Billy Butler.
•
Max Hitman added an RBI single in the top of the second to draw the Hawks level, but an infield single by Max Mircovich put the hosts back on top after two.
•
Brandon Drapeau tied the game once again for SJU in the top of the sixth with a solo home run.
• An inning later, an RBI single by
Brendan Hueth gave the Hawks the lead before a two-out, bases-loaded single by
Liam Bendo plated two runs and pushed the lead to 6-3.
• The Rams threatened in the eighth, getting the tying run to the plate with one out, but
Luke Zimmerman navigated around the trouble to preserve the lead.Â
Hayden Seig then came on and worked around a one-out single to shut the door in the ninth.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Zimmerman allowed three hits in five shutout innings of relief to notch the win, while Seig recorded his third save of the season. Trystan Levesque took the loss for Rhode Island after allowing five runs on 10 hits in six and a third innings.
• Zimmerman, Seig, and starter
Ryan Devine did not allow a walk in the game while combining for five strikeouts.
• Cossetti's home run was his 12th of the season, while Drapeau's was his third.
• Hueth, Drapeau, and
Brett Callahan each recorded two hits on the day.
