Men's Rowing Battles City Rivals at the Bergen Cup

5/2/2021 11:29:00 AM

The Saint Joseph's men's rowing team continued its challenging schedule as the Hawks took on their city rivals in the Bergen Cup on Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

"The Bergen and Kelly Cup weekend is always a great test for all the Philadelphia colleges headed into Dad Vail weekend. This year was unique due to the fact that the Quakers from University of Pennsylvania joined in to make it even more competitive," said Saint Joseph's head coach Mike Irwin. "Our top three boats - Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, 3rd Varsity 8 - did not have performances that matched our week of practices. It is frustrating for any athlete to have that happen, but execution in the moment is the final piece to capitalizing on fitness and skill. Our varsity coxed-four, in its first race of the season, did a great job of taking control of their race and never looking back."

How It Happened
• The Hawks' Varsity 8 of C-John Carluccio, 8-Ed Lemanowicz, 7-Kjel Schlemmer, 6-Devin Swech, 5-Slam Dunkley, 4-Collin Seabrook, 3-Ian Gallagher, 2-Max Bernstein, 1-David Gee turned in a time of 6:08.8 in the 2,000 meter course.
• Saint Joseph's 2nd Varsity 8 of C-David Knapp, 8-Jacob Vucinaj, 7-Thomas Rigali, 6-Nick Coppola, 5-Collin Petersen, 4-Eamon Coyne, 3-William Altier, 2-Joe Kelly, 1-Harris Beckmeyer finished fourth in its race with a time of 6:25.2.
• In the 3rd Varsity 8 race, the Hawks' squad of C-Alexander Mayo, 8-Noah Pingul, 7-Michael Fedele, 6-Jack Yeager, 5-Gavin O'Connor, 4-Will Sims, 3-Cameron McNeill, 2-Aaron Tully, 1-Rob Dougherty turned in a time of 6:22.0.
• Saint Joseph's Varsity 4 of C-Quinn Burns, 4-AJ Oves, 3-Owen Lyons, 2-Nicholas Hutchinson, 1-Ryan Trebel had a strong performance, winning its race by open water in a time of 7:06.1.
• "We are already looking forward to next Saturday. Due to the pandemic the Dad Vail is down to a one-day format - heats and finals only. There will 18 entries in the Varsity 8, 13 entries in the 2nd Varsity 8, eight entries in the Third Varsity 8, and 15 boats in the Varsity 4. We have seen all the top seeds in the field this year so we know what we need to do to get to the medals stand," Irwin said.
