MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team notched a 5-2 victory over La Salle on Saturday to sweep a four-game series at Smithson Field. With the win, the Hawks finished second in the Atlantic 10 North Division and claimed the final berth in the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• In a "Game 7" atmosphere at Smithson Field, the Hawks struck right out of the gate, as
Brendan Hueth singled and
Luca Trigiani doubled to start the game. With two outs,
Brett Callahan singled to score both runners and give SJU the lead.
• Saint Joseph's (21-17 overall, 15-9 Atlantic 10) extended the lead in the fourth when
Brandon Drapeau took Gabe Rappa's first pitch of the inning deep over the right field fence to make it a 3-0 game.
•
Andrew Cossetti got in on the act an inning later, as Trigiani led off the fifth with a single before Cossetti hit his 14th home run of the season to extend the lead to 5-0.
• La Salle (32-21 overall, 15-9 Atlantic 10) threatened multiple times, but finally broke through in the eighth. With two on and two out, Elijah Dickerson doubled to right center to score a pair, but was thrown out trying to extend it into a triple to end the inning.
•
Luke Zimmerman then came on to throw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the win.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Zimmerman notched his first save of the season as part of an outstanding three-man pitching effort on Saturday.
Matt Kennedy got the start and tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five to improve to 2-0, while
Mike Falco allowed just the two runs on three hits in three innings to get the game to the ninth. Rappa took the loss to fall to 4-2; he allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings.
