RICHMOND, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball season came to a close at The Diamond on Thursday night as the Hawks fell to Dayton, 11-5, in an elimination game at the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
•
Brendan Hueth had a pair of singles in the early innings, but it wasn't until the top of the fourth that either team broke through. The Flyers took advantage of four hits and two errors to hang a six-spot on the board.
•
Andrew Cossetti got one back for Saint Joseph's (21-19) in the bottom of the frame when he launched his 15th home run of the season well over the fence in left. Later in the inning,
Brett Callahan would add an RBI single to make it a 6-2 game.
• Dayton (23-26) got one back on a home run by Riley Tirotta in the fifth, but the Hawks continued to chip away in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded,
Liam Bendo reached on a fielding error before an RBI groundout by
Brandon Drapeau made it a 7-4 game.
• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, a three-run home run by Marcos Pujols in the sixth pushed the lead back to six.
• Cossetti then led off the seventh with his second home run of the night to cut the deficit to five, but the Flyers tacked on a run in the ninth to set the final margin.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Bryce Hellgeth was credited with the win after allowing a run in two and two-thirds innings of relief.Â
Luke Smith took the loss after being charged with six unearned runs on four hits in three and two-thirds innings.
• Hueth and Cossetti each had two hits in the game, while Cossetti scored twice and drove in a pair as well.
• Cossetti finishes the season with 16 home runs, the second-most in a single season in program history (Deon Stafford, Jr., 18 in 2016).
• The Hawks end the campaign with 20-plus wins for the 10th consecutive full season, dating back to 2011.
