PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team (3-6-0, 1-1-0 A-10) could not complete the comeback Saturday night on Sweeney Field as it fell to visiting Massachusetts (6-2-1, 1-1-0 A-10), 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UMass took an early lead during the ninth minute with a score from inside the box. The Minutemen took the 1-0 lead into the half.
- Massachusetts was quick out of the break to score its second goal. There was miscommunication on the Hawks' back line that led to the goal.
- Nearly 20 minutes later, senior Garrett Lyons was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Lyons converted to kick for his first score of the season.
- In the final minute of play, the Hawks had two shots that caromed off the woodwork.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- The Hawks outshot UMass, 16-10, and had more corner kicks (8-3).
- Lyons tallied his score of the campaign and is the ninth different Hawk to tally a goal this season.
- Rookie Lars Haavie (0-4-0) made five saves and had one goal against.

St. Joe's returns to Sweeney Field on Tuesday for a non-conference bout with the Hofstra Pride.
