RICHMOND, Va. –Â
Manu Ghigliotti's penalty corner goal midway through the fourth quarter helped carry the Saint Joseph's field hockey team past Richmond, 1-0, at Crenshaw Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• For the second time in three days, the Hawks played a scoreless first half, with neither team able to find the cage.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (8-2 overall, 2-0 Atlantic 10) started off the third quarter on the front foot, earning a corner less than two minutes in and just barely failing to convert on the doorstep.
Â
• Richmond (2-7 overall, 2-1 Atlantic 10) would have a pair of chances, but the Hawks ended the frame with a 12-2 edge in shots for the quarter.
Â
• SJU made its second-half dominance count with just over six minutes to go in the fourth as Ghigliotti beat UR's Erika Latta on a corner, with assists from
Cassidy Atchison and
Katy Benton.
Â
• From there, the Hawks nearly doubled the lead on a break but the attempt trickled wide; in the end, the Hawks were able to see out the victory without allowing the Spiders a scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Robin Bleekemolen made three saves in the shutout win, while Latta stopped eight shots.
Â
• Both teams recorded four shots, with one on goal, and three penalty corners in the first half; however, the Hawks played downhill in the second half, outshooting the Spiders 19-2 and earning 11 corners while conceding none over the final 30 minutes.
Â
• Ghigliotti's goal was her ninth of the season, giving her the team and conference lead in goals and points (19). Benton's assist was her seventh of the year, also good for the team and league leads.
