Men’s Soccer Stuns Reigning SoCon Champs, UNC Greensboro, in Double Overtime, 2-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – With 1:16 remaining in the second overtime period Sunday afternoon, junior Alex Hartmann headed a goal past the UNC Greensboro (2-2) keeper to claim a 2-1 victory for Saint Joseph's (1-3) over the defending SoCon Champions.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Graduate student Daniel Morales cleared the ball out of the box and up to midfield during the 18th minute of play that rookie Blake Driehuis played to himself for a breakaway goal.
  • With 2:47 remaining in regulation, the Spartans converted a penalty kick to knot the game at one apiece.
  • On the game winner, senior Garrett Lyons sent a throw in into the box for Hartmann to head to the far corner.
BEHIND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The victory marks the Hawks' first on the 2021 campaign.
  • St. Joe's outshot the hosting Spartans, 11-10.
  • UNCG held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-5.
  • Rookie Lars Haavie made three saves over the first 90:28 before exiting the game with an injury.
  • Freshman Christian Matson (1-0) finished the final 18:16 with one save and his first career victory.
  • SJU played a man up for a bulk of the match once a red card was administered to a Spartan at 29:33.

Saint Joseph's will travel to Cornell on Friday for a 5 p.m. kickoff against The Big Red.
