PHILADELPHIA – Four Hawks registered double figure scoring totals for the second time in three games as Saint Joseph's (5-9, 1-1 A-10) ran away with a 74-54 victory against Richmond (11-5, 2-1 A-10), in part to a 42-23 second half spurt.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hawks started the game on an 11-2 run over the initial 3:18 on 5-of-6 shooting. Richmond cut the deficit with a 6-3 spurt up to the media stoppage at 3:43. Senior Lovin Marsicano continued her scoring efforts from last game with eight points up to that point. Richmond capitalized on two SJU turnovers over the remainder of the stanza for an 8-4 advantage to close the gap to 18-16 after one.
- SJU opened the lead to 26-19 after an 8-3 margin over the opening 3:01 of the second period. The Spiders took 12 of the next 18 points to close the gap to 32-31 at the half. Prior to the Hawks' final bucket of the half, Richmond held a lead for 19 seconds.
- After a Richmond 7-3 margin to start the third, St. Joe's went 20-5 over the final 7:59 with the Hawks on top, 55-43, heading into the final quarter. On the massive run, St. Joe's tallied 16 unanswered points.
- St. Joe's bumped its lead with a 9-6 advantage up to the media stoppage with 4:39 left in the game. SJU closed the game with 10-2 run for a 20-point victory.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- St. Joe's tallied a season best 50.0% (30-of-60) from the field, 43.8% (7-of-16) from deep, and 53.8% (7-of-13) from the line.
- Richmond shot 33.9% (21-of-62) overall, 18.8% (3-of-16) from long range, and 75.0% (9-of-12) from the stripe. Both their field goal and three-point field goal percentage were the Spiders second lowest totals on the season, only ahead of the campaign opener.
- The Hawks won the rebounding battle at +11, their second-best differential on the year, while the turnover margin was even.
- The reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, Talya Brugler, recorded the best game of her career with her first double-double. She scored 17 points on an 8-of-14 outing, with a career best in both rebounds (13) and blocks (3).
- Marsicano led the team in scoring for the second-straight game with 18 points. She was 7-of-12 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from deep, and added seven rebounds to her line.
- Freshman Mackenzie Smith posted 14 points and seven boards as she shot 5-of-12 overall, and 2-of-4 from three-point land.
- Rookie Julia Nyström rounded out the double-digit scoring totals with 12 points on a 5-of-8 evening.
- Graduate student Katie Jekot handed out a career best 10 assists, while turning the ball over just once. The Enola, Pa. native added five points, four steals, three rebounds, and one block to her totals.
