PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (6-12, 2-4 A-10) dropped a Saturday afternoon matinee to UMass (16-5, 4-3 A-10), 74-48.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- It was nearly even over the first 5:00 of play before the media stoppage with UMass up, 12-11. The visitors widened their margin with a 13-5 run over the final five minutes of the first period to hold a 25-16 lead.
- The teams traded the first eight points of the second stanza for four apiece before the Hawks called a timeout – turned media break at 6:43. UMass led, 29-20. The Minutewomen finished the frame with a 13-8 advantage to take a 42-28 lead into the break.
- SJU had an 8-4 run over the initial 4:10 to cut the deficit to 10 at 46-36. UMass responded with a 5-0 spurt over the next 51 seconds to force a timeout by the Hawks with the score 51-36. UMass ended the stanza on a 10-0 run to push the difference to 61-36.
- UMass finished the game with a 13-12 advantage in the final period.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- St. Joe's shot 37.5% (18-of-48) overall, 25.0% (5-of-20) from long range, 50.0% (7-of-14) from the line.
- UMass finished 44.1% (30-of-68) from the floor, 36.8% from three-point range (7-of-19), and 70.0% (7-of-10) from the stripe.
- The Minutewomen won the turnover (+7) and rebounding (+20) margin.
- Junior Gabby Smalls was tied with a team high 11 points. She went 5-of-8 from the floor and added two blocks.
- Rookie Talya Brugler also tallied 11 points with nine coming from long range. She added four boards to her line.
- Senior Katie Mayock corralled a team high five rebounds.
