PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team overcame an early deficit at Sweeney Field, scoring a late equalizer to share points against Fordham on Saturday night Atlantic 10 action.
The 1-1 draw moved both the Hawks and the Rams to 1-1-4 in Atlantic 10 play
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visitors grabbed the opening goal with the first shot of the game as Ben Shepherd's through ball cut through the Hawk defense, finding Ram captain Daniel Espeleta who powered it into the back of the net.
- Saint Joseph's created the majority of the chances in the opening half, believing to have tied the game up as Blake Driehuis found the back of the net. The equalizer was ruled out as the assistant referee had his flag raised for offside.
- The Hawks again had a goal ruled out as James Fletcher found the back of the net in the second half, just timing his run a little too early. Omry Perel later fell victim to the flag, as the Hawks had their third goal ruled out for offside in the opening hour.
- With Fordham creating some pressure of their own in the second half, Luis Ludosan equaling the task with two saves in three minutes.
- Following a corner kick for the Hawks, Alex Hartmann found himself on the end of a cross into the box, his towering header aimed for the far post. Fordham keeper Callum James dove well to his right to collect the effort and stave off the Hawk attack.
- Freshman Luke Johnson looked to make an impact on the game as he made a run into the box. Philipp Wujewitsch's cross found the rookie, who tried to slip a flicked on effort from an awkward angle. The Ram goalkeeper once again was able to smother it and keep the Hawks out.
- The pressure finally payed off in the 86th minute, the rookie again in the middle of the attack. Johnson picked up the ball and laid it into the path of Perel, who turned and fired from the left side of the six yard box into the upper right corner before wheeling off in celebration as the Hawks finally grabbed their goal.
- Neither team found a dangerous opportunity in the remaining time, settling for the 1-1 draw.
