PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team found its rhythm on Saturday evening, scoring three goals from three different players en route to a comfortable 3-0 win over St. Bonaventure in Atlantic 10 action.
Saint Joseph's (3-5-8, 2-1-4 A-10) made a significant claim to a potential postseason berth, grabbing a vital three points to move to 10, sitting in a tie for fourth before all results were final on Saturday evening. With only the top eight teams advancing to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, St. Bonaventure (3-9-3, 0-5-2) sit outside of contention having been eliminated in its prior contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks nearly opened the scoring just four minutes in, Omry Perel finding space down the right side of the pitch. The Israeli blasted his shot low and to the far post but the Bonnies keeper was able to make himself big and keep the shot out of goal before James Fletcher's rebound trailed wide.
- Saint Joseph's soon found its early goal however, Kenyatta Collins grabbing his second of the season. A long Garrett Lyons throw made its way through the box, Collins the quickest to it as his reflex redirection made its way to the far corner to give the Hawks a lead.
- Chris Hunt found Fletcher in acres of space down the right side in the 18th minute, the senior forward cutting onto his left and firing low to the near post. St. Bonaventure's Jules Dechert made a clean save to deny the Hawks its second of the game.
- The Bonnies had a golden chance to grab an equalizer just after the half hour mark, a bouncing ball falling to Xaver Ehrlich inside the box after a SBU corner. The Bonnies defender cleanly struck his volley, Luis Ludosan seeing little of it before stonewalling the attempt with his right arm before the ball was cleared out of danger.
- The Hawks went into the half with a 16-4 advantage in shots, unable to add to their one goal advantage.
- Perel again almost added to the Hawk tally in the opening minute of the second half, his curling effort from just outside the box tailing just feet wide of the post.
- The continued Hawk attack soon proved fruitful as Perel finally rippled the back of the net for a goal that had been ever evasive. An industrious run from Blake Driehuis found the sophomore dip his shoulder past the defense on the left side of the pitch, laying it off in the path of Perel. Perel pushed it one time onto his right foot and curled it into the far corner to double the Saint Joseph's advantage.
- Only minutes later, the Hawks tallied the third of the night as captain Garrett Lyons joined in on the goalscoring action. An Ariel Hadar free kick found its way through bodies in the box, striking the post. The rebound found its way to Lyons, who quickly pounced and snuck it past the St. Bonaventure goalkeeper.
- The Hawks were able to put the game into cruise control, walking off Sweeney Field for the last time in the regular season with a 3-0 win.
