MERION STATION, Pa. – Two goals from
Freke van Tilburg and another outstanding defensive effort led the ninth-ranked Saint Joseph's past #18 UMass, 3-0, at Ellen Ryan Field on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (9-3 overall, 4-0 Atlantic 10) jumped out to an early lead as van Tilburg converted on a corner from
Lily Santi and
Kate Crist.
• That's where it would stay until the last five minutes of the third quarter, when van Tilburg struck again. A passing sequence off the insert led to
Sol Borensztein finding van Tilburg at the top of the circle and she fired home to double the lead.
•
Noa Schuringa scored her first collegiate goal with 5:41 to go in the fourth, redirecting a hard ball across the circle from
Leigh James into the cage to set the final score.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• UMass (9-3 overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10) managed just one shot on the afternoon, coming on the Minutewomen's only penalty corner opportunity. The Hawks ripped off 14, putting eight of them on target.
•
Robin Bleekemolen and
Janelle Ward combined for the shutout, SJU's fifth in a row. Myrte Van Herwijnen made five saves for UMass. The Hawks earned six corners on the day and scored on two of them.
