Jekot Hits Milestone, Hawks Remain Undefeated in Win Over Terriers

PHILADELPHIA – Katie Jekot enters the Saint Joseph's women's basketball record book on Thursday evening, cementing a place in Hawk history after scoring her 1,000th career point in the 65-61 win over Boston University in Hagan Arena.

Saint Joseph's (7-0) remains undefeated, tying the second-best start in program history and the longest win streak to start a season since 2005-06, also starting 7-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors grabbed a quick 7-2 lead in the opening minutes, Maggie Pina with five of the first seven points for the Terriers.
  • A large dose of Talya Brugler helped counter for the Hawks, the sophomore forward scoring twice from behind the arc, scoring eight points in the opening frame to help tie the game at 15-15. A pair of free throws gave the Hawks an opening quarter lead of 17-15 despite shooting just 5-17 (29.4%) from the field.
  • Katie Jekot opened the second quarter with a 5-0 personal run to extend the Hawk lead to 22-15. However, the Crimson and Gray would go scoreless over the next three minutes to allow BU back into it with four-straight points of its own. Jekot would call her own number once again, spinning out of trouble and finishing off balance to collect her 1,001st career point at Saint Joseph's scoring the first seven points of the quarter for the Hawks.
  • Five points in a row from Olivia Mullins gave the Hawks their largest lead of the first half, taking a 29-20 advantage into the final three minutes of the half. The Terriers closed strong, scoring seven of the final nine points to cut the halftime lead to 31-27 for SJU.
  • A couple of forced Terrier turnovers and transition from the Hawks in the opening minute of the second half allowed SJU to run out to the first four points, forcing Boston University into a quick timeout. Jaden Walker extended the Hawk lead midway through the third with an offensive rebound and putback, tallying the largest lead of the night before a Mullins triple extended it to 49-36.
  • Foul trouble from St. Joe's allowed the Terriers to cut the lead to single-digits, trailing 51-43 headed into the fourth.
  • Boston University started the fourth on an 8-1 run over the first three and a half minute, the Hawks clinging to a 52-51 lead with six minutes to play. Brugler would stop the spurt, converting on the old fashioned three-point play to extend the lead to four.
  • Every time the Terriers would close the gap to one possession, the Hawks continued to find an answer until a pair of free throws by Maggie Pina tied the game up at 61-61 with under a minute remaining.
  • On the other end, Brugler went strong to the hoop and once again drew a foul, converting her sixth and seventh free throws of the contest to regain the SJU advantage. A defensive stop and Terrier foul put the Hawks at the line, but Walker failed to convert on the opportunity to give BU another opportunity.
  • On the final Terrier possession, the first shot attempt was swatted out of bounds, Laura Ziegler slashing to knock the ball out and potentially save the game-tying shot. Walker redeemed the free throw attempts with a strong defensive position that forced Pina into a turnover.
  • Julia Nyström knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to four with less than two seconds on the clock and the Hawks were able to close out the victory for the seventh straight to start the season.

GAME NOTES
  • Katie Jekot became the 26th women to eclipse 1,000 points in program history, the first since Chelsea Woods '18. Jekot finished with 13 points, adding six assists and five rebounds. The Enola, Pa. native sits just 18 assists shy of cracking the top 10 in program history.
  • Lost in the shuffle, Brugler's excellent night was capped off with a tied career-high 23 points, adding six rebounds.
  • Laura Ziegler was just 2-9 from the field for four points, but the three-time A-10 rookie of the week added a career-high 12 rebounds, two assists and a game-saving block late down the stretch.
  • Mullins also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points for the third time in her career to tie her previous best.
  • The Hawks had their worst shooting night by far of the season, finishing 22-65 (33.8%) from the floor and just 5-21 (23.8%) from distance.
  • St. Joe's had 13 assists on 22 made baskets, only turning the ball over eight times on the night.
