MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team opened its 2022 campaign with a 13-3 rout of Quinnipiac at Smithson Field on Friday afternoon.
Nate Thomas hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, while
Mike Falco struck out nine in four innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Early on, the Hawks were the beneficiaries of some Bobcat miscues as three passed balls led to three runs.
Brett Callahan was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on the first of four passed balls allowed by Quinnipiac's Keegan O'Connor on the day. Two more allowed
Andrew Cossetti, who had walked, and
Jake Artz, who reached on an error, to score in the third and make it a 3-0 ballgame.
• Quinnipiac (0-1) got on the board in the fourth on an infield single by Gianni Arici.
• Saint Joseph's (1-0) broke things open in the sixth as
Liam Bendo started things off with a walk and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Luca Trigiani. A pair of walks and an error loaded the bases for Thomas, who promptly unloaded them with a missile over the Hawks' bullpen beyond the right field fence to extend the lead to 8-1.
• Trigiani and Callahan would hit RBI singles in seventh to push the lead to nine before Cossetti was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run.
Jake Artz brought home a run with a double play grounder before Thomas added his fifth RBI of the day with a single to right center.
• The Bobcats scored a pair in the ninth on a two-run single by Sebastian Mueller to close out the scoring.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Ian McCole and
Peter Gallo combined with Falco to keep the Hawks in front on the mound. McCole started the game and allowed a run on four hits while striking out three in four innings before Falco came on and allowed one hit while fanning nine in four shutout innings to earn the win.
• Brandyn Garcia took the loss, allowing three runs – only one earned – on one hit in four innings. He walked five and struck out four.
• Thomas and
Tim Cavanaugh each recorded two hits for SJU, while Mueller had a multi-hit day for the visitors.
• Trigiani drove in two runs, while Callahan scored three times. Artz, Bendo, and Cossetti added a pair of runs scored apiece as well.
