Defense Leads Women’s Basketball to Senior Day Win Over GW, 57-34

PHILADELPHIA – A top-notch defensive performance for Saint Joseph's 10-15, 6-7 A-10) led the Hawks to a Senior Day victory over George Washington (11-15, 4-9 A-10), 57-34. The 34 points allowed is a season best for the Hawks' defense and helped snap the Colonials four-game win streak.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks jumped out to an 8-1 lead over the opening 2:09 of the game before GW tallied its first bucket of the contest ahead of the media break at 4:59. A 7-6 advantage for the home team bumped the lead to 15-9 after one.
  • SJU recorded the first five points of the second stanza before a timeout by GW stopped the game with 8:27 left. The Hawks tallied a 10-0 run over the next 4:06 before the Colonials took another timeout with St. Joe's up 30-11. The period ended with SJU up 31-13. The four points allowed in the second period is the lowest given up in a quarter this season by the Hawks.
  • GW chipped away at the deficit with an 8-5 advantage over the first 5:04 of the third frame to put St. Joe's up, 36-21. The Colonials continued to dip into the Hawks' lead with a 7-2 scoring margin the rest of the frame.
  • SJU regained a sizable lead with a 9-0 spurt over the first 3:53 of the final stanza to push it to 47-28. They finished with a 10-6 advantage to take the win. The six total points allowed in the final period is the best finish to a game this season for St. Joe's.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
  • SJU shot 46.5% (20-of-43) overall, 50.0% (4-of-8) from deep, and 72.2% (13-of-18) from the line.
  • GW went 20.3% (13-of-64) from the field, 5.0% (1-of-20) from long range, and 35.0% (7-of-20) from the stripe.
  • The Colonials won both the rebounding (+5) and turnover battles (+5).
  • Rookie Mackenzie Smith led all scorers with 21 points. She finished 7-of-10 overall, including 2-of-2 from deep, and 5-of-6 at the line.
  • Sophomore Olivia Mullins was very active for the Hawks. She scored nine points, corralled a career best eight boards, and handed out four assists.
  • Senior Katie Mayock tallied a season best eight points with sophomore Emma Boslet doing the same.
  • Freshman Talya Brugler and graduate student Alayna Gribble grabbed seven rebounds each.
