Women’s Basketball Downs Duquesne to End Regular Season; Conference Pairings to Be Announced Saturday Night

PITTSBURGH – Four Hawks tallied double-digit scoring efforts Saturday afternoon to push Saint Joseph's (11-16, 7-8 A-10) to victory over Duquesne (11-17, 6-10 A-10), 73-68. St. Joe's awaits the release of the Atlantic 10 Championship Bracket after the final game is played on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was nearly even through the opening 5:03 of the game with the Hawks holding a 13-10 lead. The Hawks finished with a 9-4 margin the rest of the way with their nine points sandwiched around the Dukes' baskets. SJU went 9-0 over a 3:07 span with a 22-14 lead.
  • SJU extended the lead with a 12-11 advantage over the first 5:20 of the second period. The Hawks went 8-4 over a 58 second span just before the timeout for a 34-25 lead. Duquesne battled back to pull the game within one possession at the half, 37-34, after a 9-3 spurt.
  • Duquesne took the lead after a 6-2 run to start the third. SJU answered with its own 6-3 spurt to regain the lead at 45-43 at the media break with 4:48 remaining. St. Joe's ripped off a 11-4 run up to the 2:33 mark when Duquesne called timeout. The Hawks kept the peddle to the floor with a 6-2 advantage up to the horn for a 62-49 lead. Rookie Mackenzie Smith tallied 18 points in the third quarter for SJU.
  • Duquesne started the fourth with a 5-3 advantage at the media break at 6:15. SJU led 65-54. The Dukes outpaced the Hawks 14-8 to end the game.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
  • St. Joe's shot 47.1% (24-of-51) overall, 47.4% (9-of-19) from deep, and 80.0% (16-of-20) from the line.
  • Duquesne went 42.6% (29-of-68) from the floor, 23.5% (4-of-17) from long range, and 46.2% (6-of-13) from the stripe.
  • The Dukes won the rebounding (+3) and turnover (+7) battles.
  • Smith finished with a career high 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from deep. She added a near perfect 9-of-10 from the line, seven rebounds, and career highs of three steals and three blocks.
  • Rookie Talya Brugler posted 15 points on a 6-of-10 day. She nailed 3-of-5 triples and added six rebounds and four assists.
  • Freshman Laila Fair dropped 12 points on a 5-of-8 outing.
  • Graduate student Katie Jekot finished with 10 points, eight assists, and five rebounds.
