DAVIDSON, N.C. – Saint Joseph's women's basketball (7-13, 3-5 A-10) completed the comeback Friday afternoon against Davidson (12-9, 3-6 A-10) with rookie
Talya Brugler leading the Hawks with 18 points and a career high 16 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Davidson jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the initial 2:34 before a 5-2 spurt for the Hawks pulled the game to 8-7 with 5:41 left. The Wildcats added four-straight into the media break at 4:44 for a 12-7 advantage. SJU claimed a 17-7 run over the remainder of the period to hold a 24-19 lead after one.
- The home team claimed the next nine points over the opening 2:04 of the second stanza to force an SJU timeout with Davidson back on top, 28-24. Davidson held the upper hand 17-16 through the rest of the half for a 45-40 lead.
- Davidson pushed its lead up to 10 with a 7-2 spurt to open the second half at the media break with 4:33 left. SJU pulled within six after three periods with an 8-4 advantage, including 8-2 run over the final 3:40. 'Cats led 56-50.
- St. Joe's opened the final period with a 6-1 spurt over the first 2:35 to close the gap to just one at 57-56. Davidson took four of the next five points before a Hawks' timeout was called with 3:14 remaining. The Hawks completed the comeback with a 10-5 margin as rookie Mackenzie Smith scored the game winner with six seconds left on a driving layup.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- St. Joe's shot 43.6% (24-of-55) from the field, 40.0% (8-of-20) from deep, and 73.3% (11-of-15) from the line.
- Davidson went 50.0% (27-of-54) overall, 50.0% (9-of-18) from long range, and 60.0% (3-of-5) from the stripe.
- SJU won the rebounding margin (+12) and lost the turnover battle (-6).
- Brugler went 7-of-12 overall for her third double-double of the year (18 points, 16 rebounds).
- Graduate student Katie Jekot dropped 11 points and handed out nine points to near a double-double. She also corralled four rebounds and made one steal.
- Smith finished with 11 points on a 5-of-12 day.
