MERION STATION, Pa. – A pair of big innings proved critical as the Saint Joseph's baseball team held on for an 11-7 win over Villanova at Smithson Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Brendan Hueth hit a pair of home runs for the Hawks, while
Nate Thomas added one of his own.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (9-4) went ahead in the second inning as Hueth led off the frame with a home run down the left field line.
• The Hawks expanded the lead in the fourth, sending 10 batter to the plate and scoring five times. Hueth and
Brandon Drapeau started things off with singles before
Liam Bendo followed with one of his own to score Hueth and make it 2-0.
Ryan Cesarini then greeted new pitcher Cole Vanderslice with a triple to double the advantage.
•
Luca Trigiani would score Cesarini with a single before eventually coming around to score on a throwing error.
• Villanova (3-11) got one back in the top of the fifth before adding three more in the seventh to make it a 6-4 game.
• Drapeau scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh before a four-spot in the eighth gave the Hawks some breathing room.
Jake Artz led off with a double before Thomas ripped a screamer into the right field bullpen to make it 9-4.
Andrew Cossetti was then hit by a pitch to bring Hueth to the plate, and he went deep for the second time with a long home run to dead center field to extend the margin to 11-4.
• The Wildcats got back within four in the ninth, but that would be as close as the visitors would get.
