AMHERST, Mass. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team opened conference play at UMass on Friday, falling to the Minutemen 23-7 at Earl Lorden Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (12-11 overall, 0-1 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the top of the first on a double by
Jake Artz and a single by
Andrew Cossetti.
• UMass (9-8-1 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) drew level in the bottom of the first, but an RBI single by
Nate Thomas and an error plated a pair of runs to put SJU back on top.
• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Minutemen would score three in the second, eight in the third, and three in the fourth to open a 16-4 lead.
• A double by
Brendan Hueth, a sacrifice fly by
Liam Bendo, and a groundout by
Luca Trigiani gave the Hawks a trio of runs in the sixth, but the hosts would tack on seven in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Kevin Dow earned the win for UMass, while
Ian McCole took the loss.
• The teams combined for 39 hits in the game; Cole Hebble of UMass was 5-for-6 to lead the Minutemen, while
Brett Callahan went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Hawks.
