Baseball Routs George Washington for Hamburg’s 300th Win

MERION STATION, Pa. – Saint Joseph's baseball head coach Fritz Hamburg notched the 300th win of his career on Friday afternoon as the Hawks rolled past George Washington, 11-1, in the opener of a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Smithson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (18-13 overall, 4-3 Atlantic 10) took advantage of a costly error that allowed Ryan Cesarini to score the opening run of the game.  After a sacrifice fly by Luca Trigiani doubled the lead, Brett Callahan followed with a long home run to right center to double it once again to 4-0 after two innings.

• The Hawks added a pair when Brandon Drapeau drove in a run with a groundout in the third and Conlan Wall singled one home in the fourth.

• George Washington (17-17 overall, 5-2 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Anthony Frechette, but an RBI groundout by Cesarini in the seventh restored the six-run advantage.

• SJU put the game out of reach in the eighth as Wall drove in another run on an infield single before Andrew Cossetti hit his league-leading 14th home run to center field to bring home three more and set the final margin.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
Ian McCole was outstanding on the mound for Saint Joseph's, retiring 11 in a row at one point.  He allowed one run on two hits and struck out five in six innings of work.  Matt McShane allowed one hit and fanned four in three innings of relief to earn the save.  Harrison Cohen took the loss for GW after being charged with six runs, three of them earned, on nine hits in six innings.

• Wall finished the day 4-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in, while Callahan was 3-for-4 with two RBI and was one of three Hawks, with Cossetti and Brendan Hueth, to score twice.

• Hamburg, who took the reins of the program in 2009, is the Hawks' all-time leader in wins, a mantle he took over in 2016.  He is the sixth-winningest coach in the history of Saint Joseph's athletics, nine wins behind legendary men's basketball coach Bill Ferguson for fifth on the list.
