WATERBURY, Conn. – The USciences softball team scored the first run of the afternoon in the first inning of game one, but that was all the Devils could manage in 2-1 and 6-0 losses at Post on Friday afternoon.
Game One
Abbigail Markee led off with a single and came home on Taylor Hamm's two-out single, after Ashley Steiner had sacrificed her to second.
USciences had opportunities to add to its lead, advancing runners into scoring position in both the second and third to no avail, and the Eagles finally got to starter Megan Master in the fourth as a single and double to lead off the frame tied the score before a sacrifice fly drove in the game-winning run.
Steiner and Gabriella Polera led off the sixth and seventh with a walk and single, respectively, but the Devils never advanced a runner into scoring position again.
Master went the distance for the seventh time this year, with her seven strikeouts - against just one walk - falling one shy of a career-high.
Markee's first inning run was her 29th this year, now fifth in the program's Division II-era single-season history. She later singled in the fifth inning of the nightcap to move into a tie for second with 51 hits.
Game Two
Trailing 3-0 after a three-run third, USciences loaded the bases in the fourth thanks to back-to-back singles by Gabrielle Simms and Hamm and an error, but the Devils could not get on the board.
Simms and Hamm both finished 2-for-3, with Simms moving into sole possession of fifth in program history with 149 career hits. Her 47 hits this year are sixth in the program's single-season annals.
