Baseball Takes Series Finale at VCU, 6-3

RICHMOND, Va. – Andrew Cossetti's grand slam capped off a five-run fifth inning that proved to be the difference as the Saint Joseph's baseball team won the finale of its weekend series at VCU on Sunday by a 6-3 score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (21-16 overall, 7-5 Atlantic 10) got on the board right away as Nate Thomas hit a solo home run in the top of the first.

• Noah Weber held the Rams without a hit until the fourth inning and escaped a jam with runners on second and third to preserve the lead.

• The Hawks opened things up in the fifth.  A Tim Cavanaugh single and a Brett Callahan double put runners on second and third for Conlan Wall, who beat out an infield single so score Cavanaugh and double the lead.

• After Thomas singled to load the bases, the Rams lifted starter Campbell Ellis in favor of Jaden Griffin.  Cossetti promptly welcomed Griffin to the game by ripping his first pitch deep over the wall in left center for his league-leading 15th home run of the season and a 6-0 SJU lead.

• VCU (22-16 overall, 7-5 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the fifth on an RBI single by Ben Nippolt.  The Rams threatened in the seventh, but Nippolt lined out to Luca Trigiani at short, who doubled off the runner at second to end the inning.

• The Rams got another one on an A.J. Mathis single, but Wall notched an outfield assist to cut down one of the base runners and help prevent a bigger inning.

• Tyler Locklear homered with two outs in the ninth, but Ryan Devine fanned Logan Amiss to end the game.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Mike Falco earned the win for SJU to improve to 6-2 on the season after three and two-thirds innings of relief.  Ellis allowed five runs on seven hits in four and a third innings to take the loss.

• Weber allowed just one hit over four shutout innings, while Devine notched his third save of the season after recording the final four outs of the game.

• Wall, Thomas, and Brandon Drapeau had two hits apiece for the Hawks, while Thomas scored two runs.  Cossetti led all hitters with four runs batted in.
