Softball Suffers Late Game Two Loss to CACC Leader Georgian Court

PHILADELPHIA – The USciences softball team erased a 2-0 deficit to tie game two in the bottom of the sixth, only to have an unearned run in the seventh lift Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) leader Georgian Court to a 3-2 victory over the Devils on Monday afternoon.

This came following a 9-0 game one win by the Lions.

Game Two

Trailing 2-1, Gabrielle Simms' leadoff double led to the tying run following a wild pitch and one-out groundout by Taylor Hamm.

University of the Sciences then looked to have retired GCU in order in the top of the seventh, only for an error to extend the frame and allow the eventual game-winning to score on a two-out double.

The Devils would go down in order in the bottom-half.

Megan Master pitched 4.2 innings of relief without surrendering an earned run, giving up just four hits with three strikeouts and no walks after coming on to end the third with a double play.

That provided a spark for USciences, who would take that momentum into the dugout and cut the 2-0 deficit in half following one-out singles by Lauren Del Giudice and Abbigail Markee and a two-out RBI single by Ashley Steiner.

That was one of two hits by Steiner in the nightcap, and although the Lions threatened with doubles in both the fifth and sixth, Master worked around each to send keep the score at 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth.

Simms' double was the 30th of her career, now atop the program's record book, while her 10 this year, to go along with 48 hits, rank tied for third and tied for fifth in the program's Division II era.

Markee's third-inning run was her 28th of the season, now tied for fifth in the program's Division II era, while Hamm's 23 RBI now rank tied for ninth.

Game One

Georgian Court (19-3 CACC) scored all nine of its runs in its first three at-bats, three of which were unearned in a four-run second.

Gianna Abruzese notably pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth innings.

University of the Sciences plays its final CACC road doubleheader tomorrow, traveling to city-rival Holy Family for a 12 p.m. first pitch that was moved up from 2 p.m.
