Liam Bendo's one-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning plated
Brendan Hueth with the winning run as the Saint Joseph's baseball team topped George Mason, 10-9, at Smithson Field on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (15-12 overall, 2-2 Atlantic 10) scored in the first inning for the seventh game in a row, getting on the board through a a
Nate Thomas single.
• The Patriots took the lead in the top of the second, but the Hawks responded with a six-spot in the bottom of the frame.Â
Brett Callahan drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game before
Jake Artz singled home a pair to make it 4-2 in favor of SJU.
• Thomas then hit into a fielder's choice to score another run before
Andrew Cossetti ripped a triple down the left field line to score Thomas; Cossetti himself then came in to score on an error on the play to make it a 7-2 game.
• Callahan hit a two-run home run in the fourth to expand the lead to 9-2.
• George Mason (9-19 overall, 1-3 Atlantic 10) would begin to claw back in to the game in the fifth. The Patriots hung four on the board before adding two more in the sixth and one in the seventh to draw level.
• The Hawks would get the winning run into scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings, but it wasn't until the 11th that they cashed in. Hueth reached on a one-out single before
Paul Kokol lofted a ball that was lost in the sun for a single and advanced Hueth to second. Bendo followed with a single to right and Hueth beat the throw home to win it for Saint Joseph's.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE

Matt McShane tossed three shutout innings of relief to earn the win, while Chad Gartland allowed a run on four hits in an inning and a third to take the loss. Nether starter factored into the decision, as
Ian McCole tossed five and two-thirds innings for the Hawks while GMU starter Jared Lyons recorded just four outs before being lifted. Ryan Peterson had a solid outing in relief for the Patriots, allowing three runs in six innings out of the bullpen.

Luca Trigiani had a three-hit day for the Hawks, while Bendo, Callahan, and Thomas notched two apiece. Callahan drove in three runs and scored three times to go with three walks.
