Softball Splits Doubleheader With Saint Louis

The Saint Joseph's softball team split its series-opening doubleheader with Saint Louis on Saturday as the Hawks took the opener, 9-3, but fell in game two, 8-7, at SJU Softball Field.

How It Happened • Game 1
• Saint Louis took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Kristi Stevenson scored from third on a fielding error by the Hawks on a ball hit by Gabbie Kowalik.
• Saint Joseph's tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the third as Kayla Tauber scored on a RBI single by Taylor Marinelli.
• The Billikens retook the lead in the top of the fifth as Kowalik doubled home Stevenson to make it 2-1.
• A RBI single by Cami Newbanks scored Sadie Wise to give Saint Louis a 3-1 edge in the top of the sixth.
• A bases-loaded walk by Saint Joseph's Erica Lawrence sparked an eight-run bottom of the sixth that saw the Hawk take full control.
• Following Lawrence's walk that scored Sarah Cancila, the Hawks scored two runs on a pair of errors on a ball hit by Tauber.
• Ahead 4-3, Jordan Hinkle delivered a three-run home run to extend the Hawks' advantage to 7-3.
• Cancila singled home Marinelli to make it 8-3.
• Hailey Malito delivered the final run with a RBI double that scored Madison Fife.

• Emily Siler improved to 7-7 on the season as she allowed two earned runs on four hits, while striking out six in the complete game victory.
• Hinkle collected three RBI as she went 2-for-4, including her second home run of the season.
• Cancila was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.
• Marinelli finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.

• Kowalik gave Saint Louis a 1-0 in the top of the first on a solo home run.
• A two-run single by Jane Kaniecki gave the Billikens a 3-0 lead later in the top of the first.
• Jocelyn Abbott extended Saint Louis' lead to 4-0 with a two-out RBI single that scored Kaniecki.
• A fielding error by the Hawks allowed Allie Herron to score from third to push the Billikens ahead 5-0 in the top of the second.
• Saint Joseph's got on the board in the bottom of the second as a fielding error on a ball hit by Carly Rybinski allowed Malito to score to make it 5-1.
• A two-run double by Cancila scored Marinelli and Fife to bring the Hawks to within 5-3 in the bottom of the third.
• The Billikens extended their lead to 6-3 in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by Newbanks.
• The Hawks rallied to tie it at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run by Fife.
• Kendall Johnson put Saint Louis ahead 7-6 in the top of the seventh on a RBI single up the middle.
• A fielding error by the Hawks allowed the Billikens to score a second run in the top of the seventh to open an 8-6 advantage.
• St. Joe's made it 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh as Karlee Smith scored from third on a RBI groundout by Hinkle, but would not score again.

Inside The Boxscore • Game 2
• Starter Amanda Herr allowed four earned runs over six innings.
• Saige Stutz was the hard-luck loser as she allowed one earned run and one hit, while striking out two in an inning of relief.
• Fife was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
