OLEAN, N.Y. – After being held without a hit for more than six innings, the bats came alive late for the Saint Joseph's baseball team as the Hawks scored four times in the ninth inning to notch a 5-3 win over St. Bonaventure at Fred Handler Park in the regular season finale for both teams.
Ryan Devine tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his 13th career save, setting a new program record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Bonaventure (5-39 overall, 3-21 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the bottom of the second on a leadoff home run by Brendyn Stillman.
• The Bonnies added a pair in the third on a bases-loaded walk by Jackson DeJohn and a groundout by Matthew Williams.
• SBU starter Liam Devine took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but
Nate Thomas ended both the no-hit bid and the shutout with a solo home run to right to get the Hawks on the board and take over the team lead with his 16th round-tripper of the season. After the Bonnies couldn't cash in with the bases loaded in the seventh, neither team threatened in the eighth.
• With one out in the ninth, Saint Joseph's (28-23 overall, 12-11 Atlantic 10) went to work.
Andrew Cossetti, making his first pinch-hitting appearance of his collegiate career, obliterated an 0-2 pitch to bring the Hawks back within a run and tie Thomas for the team lead in home runs.
• That tie would last four pitches as Thomas went deep for the second time in the game and the fourth time in the series to tie the game and chase Liam Devine from the contest.
• Cody Shimp came on in relief and was greeted with a single off the bat of
Tim Cavanaugh.
Brendan Hueth followed with a first-pitch home run to give SJU its first lead of the day.
•
Ryan Devine then worked around a leadoff single to secure his seventh save of the season and a series sweep for the Hawks.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Devine saved the game for
Alec Rodriguez, who retired all three batters he faced in a perfect eighth inning. Shimp took the loss.
• Thomas drove in two runs on the day, bringing him to a total of nine RBI for the series. He also moved into second on the Hawks' all-time home run list with 31 for his career.
• Cossetti became the first Hawk to reach the 40-home run mark for his career.
