Frank Sorochen and Matt Kirchgasser have been selected as the Saint Joseph's Hawk mascots for the 2022-23 academic year, department officials announced on Wednesday.
A rising senior, Sorochen will serve as The Hawk for the men's basketball program, while Kirchgasser, a rising junior, will be The Hawk for the women's basketball program.
A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Sorochen has been a member of the Hawks' men's basketball program the past three seasons, serving most recently as head manager. A risk management and insurance major in the Haub School of Business, Sorochen is a 2019 graduate of Salesianum School (Del.), where he worked as head manager for the varsity basketball team. Sorochen replaces Alec Kerr, who donned The Hawk costume the past three years.
A finance major from Media, Pennsylvania, Kirchgasser will take over The Hawk duties from graduating senior Asia Whittenberger. A 2020 graduate of Penncrest High School, Kirchgasser was a member of the lacrosse, wrestling, cross country and track programs, while also participating in Class Council and Future Business Leaders of America.
One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has flapped its wings for more than 65 seasons. The Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."
