ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team suffered defeat in the 2022 season opener, falling on the road to Navy in a narrow 1-0 margin on Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks found the better opportunities within the opening half hour of play, Omry Perel with the first good chance for either side in the 15th minute after cutting into the box and driving over the bar from 15 yards. James Fletcher forced the first save out of the Navy keeper, as Chris Hunt curled an effort wide just moments later in the 25th minute.
- Both teams took four shots in the first half but neither side broke the deadlock after 45 minutes.
- The hosts found the back of the net early in the second half, capitalizing off a mistake in the back for SJU. An intercepted pass in the backline by David Jackson gave an easy pass to Baba Kallie who curled it into the back net 28 seconds into the half.
- Another giveaway from the Hawks on the stretch of the hour mark saw another opportunity for the Midshipmen to add to their tally, but last ditch defending from Garrett Lyons did enough to put off the attacker with a scuffed shot wide.
- Mikkel Andersen had the best chance for Saint Joseph's in the second half, finding space and turning with two minutes on the clock before firing to the top right of the goal. The keeper matched with a diving save to keep the Hawks scoreless and save the victory.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Luis Ludosan proved untested in the net besides the lone goal of the game, only one of the seven shots on target for Navy.
- The Hawks outshot the Midshipmen 10-7 and 3-1 in shots on goal. Perel tallied a team-high three shots.
