PHILADELPHIA – Three goals in the second half broke a halftime deadlock and led the 16th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team past Drexel, 5-2, at Buckley Field on Friday.
Lily Santi converted a pair of penalty stroke attempts for her second consecutive two-goal game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Drexel (0-2) took the lead midway through the first quarter on a goal by Eline Di Leva, but the Hawks would equalize in the last minute of the stanza on a penalty stroke by Santi.
• Saint Joseph's (2-1) took the lead early in the second as
Aiden Drabick sent a feed in from the left wing for
Katelyn Cocco to put home for a 2-1 lead.
• The Dragons would draw level on a goal by Amber Brouwer midway through the frame to send the teams into the break on level terms.
• For the second consecutive game, the Hawks came out firing in the second half, as
Sol Borensztein carried the ball down the wing and the end line before lifting it past Drexel keeper Megan Hadfield at a tight angle for a 3-2 lead.
• Nine minutes later, the Hawks earned a corner and after an attempt from
Manu Ghigliotti was stopped by Hadfield,
Celeste Smits knocked the rebound out of the air and into the cage to double the lead.
• Santi would net her second of the afternoon on a penalty stroke with 5:22 remaining in the fourth quarter.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Hadfield made 11 saves on the afternoon for Drexel in defeat. Substitute
Janelle Ward came on in the second quarter for
Robin Bleekemolen and earned the win in her first appearance in a Hawk uniform.
• Ward's appearance marks the first time anyone other than Bleekemolen has been in the cage for the Hawks since Victoria Kammerinke on November 15, 2019; a span stretched for 32 games and over 1,950 minutes.
• The Hawks outshot the Dragons, 24-3, and earned 13 corners while conceding just two.
