MERION STATION, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team held off Temple, 2-1, in a tight crosstown rivalry matchup on a decidedly autumnal Sunday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team was able to find the back of the cage in the first quarter, but Saint Joseph's (13-4) broke through a little more than four minutes into the second.Â
Manu Ghigliotti carried the ball down the wing before sending a searing pass toward the front of the cage;
Hailey Bitters was on the spot for a diving finish and the game's first goal.
• The Hawks took the lead into halftime, but Temple (9-7) equalized three minutes into the second half as Maddie Molchany tipped a ball on a penalty corner.
• Six minutes later, the Hawks earned a corner and made it count;
Celeste Smits inserted to
Maaike Gorissen, who left the ball for
Sol Borensztein; Borensztein slipped free to the right and fired low to the left past Temple's Molly Frey for what turned out to be the game winner.
• The Hawks weathered the fourth, holding the Owls to one shot and one corner, to secure the win.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• SJU outshot Temple, 10-3, while earning seven corners and allowing four.
•
Janelle Ward made one save in the cage for the Hawks, while Frey had three stops for the Owls.

Katelyn Cocco,
Kate Crist,
Bridget McCormick,
Lily Santi, and
Celeste Smits in a pregame ceremony.
