Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Johnson’s Early Strike Not Enough As Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 to #24 Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team led through an early goal, but fell to #24 Fordham on the road 2-1 in Atlantic 10 action on Wednesday evening.

St. Joe's falls to 3-8-1 (1-2-1 Atlantic 10) on the season while Fordham moves to 6-1-3 (3-1 Atlantic 10).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Joe's struck the net early off the foot of Luke Johnson, scoring his first of the season. Blake Driehuis dragged his defender deeper into the midfield as the sophomore midfielder made a run behind the open space. Mikkel Andersen picked out Johnson, the Harrisburg native making no mistake from close range to pick his spot into the bottom far corner to give the Hawks a lead only four minutes in.
  • The hosts leveled the game after 14 minutes from the penalty spot. Contact initiated from outside the box continued as a Fordham attacker drove into the area, falling over as the referee saw enough to point to the spot. Timo Hummrich made no mistake, goalkeeper Lars Haavie guessing the wrong way as Fordham equalized on the quarter hour mark.
  • After Trevor Jackson replaced an injured Haavie, the graduate transfer was called into action at the 30th minute. Jackson palmed a well-struck attempt to the back post onto the post, a deflection seeing the ball trickle towards the goalmouth. Captain Alex Hartmann flew into the scene, clearing the ball off of the line to keep the game level to help SJU evade danger.
  • With no further threats by either side in the opening 45 minutes, it was Jackson who was the first keeper called into action in the second half. Making himself big, the 6'6" shot stopper denied Fordham from 15 yards out as the score remained tied at 1-1.
  • The Rams took the lead in the 68th minute, capitalizing off a ball from the corner that trickled past a host of players in the box. Florian Deletioglu was able to pick it up at the top of the box and place it into the right corner to give the hosts their first lead of the night.
  • Despite mounting an attempt for an equalizer, neither side were able to register a shot over the final 22 minutes as the Rams would escape with a 2-1 victory.

QUICK NOTES
  • Johnson became the sixth Hawk to find the back of the net in the defeat, scoring the quickest goal of the season for the Crimson and Gray.
  • Andersen registered his first point of his career with the assist.
  • Jackson made three saves on the night after deputizing for Haavie.
  • Fordham ended up with a 16-5 advantage in shots, but just narrowly edging St. Joe's 5-2 in shots on target.
