#15 Field Hockey Cruises into A-10 Title Game, Tops La Salle, 4-0

RICHMOND, Va. – The 15th-ranked and top-seeded Saint Joseph's field hockey team rolled past fourth-seeded La Salle, 4-0, in the Atlantic 10 semifinals at VCU's Cary Street Field on Thursday.

With the win, the Hawks advance to their eighth consecutive Atlantic 10 title game, set for noon on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (15-4) was on the front foot from the get-go but did not manage a shot until the final minute of the first quarter.  Sol Borensztein made it count, though, taking a pass from Maaike Gorissen and firing high over La Salle's Emily Streib for a 1-0 lead after one.

• La Salle (13-6) would have its longest periods of sustained possession in the second quarter, but the Hawks held off the Explorers and cashed in at the other end, as Gorissen added another assist when Leigh James batted the ball out of the air and past Streib to double the lead with 5:39 to go in the half.

• James doubled her tally for the day and put the game effectively out of reach midway through the third; on a penalty corner, Streib denied both Borensztein and Celeste Smits in quick succession, but the third time was the charm as James tucked home the rebound for a 3-0 lead.

Lily Santi iced it for the Hawks early in the fourth.  Borensztein forced a turnover deep in the La Salle end and got the ball to Santi, who dribbled into the circle and fired a rocket into the bottom corner of the cage to set the final margin.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
Janelle Ward got the start in the cage for the Hawks but was not called on to make a save as the Hawks outshot La Salle, 12-2, and did not allow a shot on goal.  Streib made three saves for the Explorers.

• Saint Joseph's also held a 7-3 edge in corner attempts on the day.

• Thursday's game marked the ninth time this season the Hawks have held an opponent to five shots or fewer in a game, and the fifth time the defense has allowed two shots or fewer.

• James posted a two-goal semifinal for the second consecutive season; she scored both goals in the Hawks' 2-1 win over VCU in 2022.

• The Hawks will be making their eighth consecutive appearance in the conference title game, a new Atlantic 10 record.  UMass previously reached seven in a row from 1996 to 2002.

UP NEXT
The Hawks will meet second-seeded UMass in Saturday's championship game.  The contest is set to begin at noon.
