Hawks Fall in Season Opener to #2 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell on the road to #2 Maryland on Saturday afternoon in the 2023 season opener.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Maryland opened with the game's first goal, the Hawks responded moments later as Maddie Yoder grabbed her first goal of the season.
  • The hosts countered with six-straight goals to end the first period.
  • SJU opened the scoring in the second as Emma O'Neill found netting in the third minute of the second quarter. The Hawks held the second-ranked squad to just two goals in the second, keeping the score at 9-2 at the break.
  • Yoder's second goal of the game led the scoring in the third frame, but the Terps responded with five-straight goals to close out the quarter.
  • Maryland extended the lead with its lone goal in the fourth to hold a 15-3 advantage, but the Hawks kept fighting.
  • Yoder grabbed a hat trick on the six minute mark in the fourth, St. Joe's taking a lead in the fourth frame with Yoder's fourth of the contest to cut the deficit to 15-5.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Maddie Yoder led the Hawks with her four goals, matching a career-high set last year. The sophomore posted seven shots, all of them on target.
  • Emma O'Neill grabbed her first goal of the season in defeat, her and Bonnie Yu each adding two shots in the loss.
  • Jorden Concordia made 11 saves on the afternoon, facing 37 shots from the Terrapins.
  • The Hawks forced eight saves off the Maryland goalkeepers.

  • The Hawks are on the road for the first four games of the season, continuing with a trip to Lehigh on Wednesday, February 15. First draw control is set for 3 p.m.
