BALTIMORE, Md. – In a classic matchup on Saturday afternoon, two top-15 teams duked it out as the Hawks nearly rallied from a five-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, falling short in a 15-14 defeat to #15 Johns Hopkins.
#13 St. Joe's falls to 3-1 on the year, while the Blue Jays move to 4-2 with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Two quick goals for the Blue Jays gave the hosts a quick lead before Tucker Brown grabbed his first of the day to cut the margin. Three more goals from Johns Hopkins sandwiching a Stephen Dwyer goal managed to give JHU a 5-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
- The Blue Jays extened the lead to 6-2 early in the second quarter before a charge from the Hawks ensued.
- Started by a laser to the top corner for Carter Page, the Hawks began a 4-0 run over the stretch of nearly nine minutes.
- Page doubled up nearly midway through quarter before Michael Gaughan's second goal of the year cut the Johns Hopkins lead.
- Collin Reich would find the net with just under three minutes to play in the half to level the score at 6-6, but the Blue Jays would shorten the run with one final goal before the halftime horn to give JHU a narrow 7-6 advantage.
- After trading a pair of goals out of the break, it would be Johns Hopkins who went on a run of its own with four-straight strikes to end the quarter, holding a 12-7 lead after three frames.
- Brown scored just one minute into the fourth, and after a response from the Blue Jays, the Hawks went on a 3-0 spurt to cut the lead to 13-11.
- The hosts responded to push the advantage to 15-12 with 10:30 to play. A seven-minute drought from both teams was finally ended as the Hawks cut the lead to two with three minutes remaining. 50 seconds later, William King tallied a strike to cut the deficit to one goal.
- The Hawks were able to get one possession in the final minute, but the attack was broken up as Johns Hopkins recovered possession and ran out the time, able to hold off a late SJU charge for a 15-14 victory.
