Hawks' Valiant Effort Comes Up Just Short To Second Seed Dayton At A-10 Championship, 60-54

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The 10th seeded Saint Joseph's Hawks battled second seed Dayton to the wire, displaying The Hawk Will Never Die motto in the Quarterfinals of the 2023 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday evening. And despite a game-high 19 points from Erik Reynolds II, including the 1,000th point of his career, St. Joe's came up just short as the Flyers prevailed, 60-54, at Barclays Center.

How It Happened
• After a back-and-forth defensive start, Saint Joseph's opened a 16-11 lead on a three-pointer by Kacper Klaczek at 8:01.
• Dayton responded with a 14-0 run to take a 25-16 advantage on a three-pointer by Toumani Camara at 4:11.
• The Hawks fought back as Cameron Brown beat the first-half buzzer with a three-pointer to bring Saint Joseph's to within 27-23 after 20 minutes.
• The Flyers scored seven straight points to open the second half as a basket by DaRon Holmes II made it 34-23 at 15:59.
• Back-to-back baskets from Lynn Greer III brought the Hawks to within 48-42.
• Dayton continued to hold the Hawks at a distance as it built its lead to 57-49 with 1:10 to play.
• Down eight, Reynolds II connected on a three-pointer, then off a steal in the Flyers' backcourt, quickly added a layup to bring the Hawks to within 57-54 with 39.4 seconds remaining.
• Following a timeout by the Flyers, Saint Joseph's nearly got a turnover, but a jump ball was called, allowing Dayton to maintain possession.
• Off a foul by the Hawks, Dayton's Mustapha Amzil connected on a pair of free throws to make it 59-54 with 11.1 seconds to go.
• Moving the ball quickly ahead, a three-pointer by Reynolds II went half way down before bouncing out as the Flyers got the rebound and sealed the game with a free throw at the other end.

Inside The Boxscore
• After being held to three points in the first half, Reynolds II scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half.
• With a three-pointer at the 12:08 mark, Reynolds II reached the 1,000-point mark for his career, becoming the 59th Hawk to reach the milestone.
• Reynolds II finished the year with 648 points for the fifth most in single-season history at St. Joe's, and tied Marvin O'Connor's 2000-01 mark of 99 three-pointers for third most in a season.
• Reynolds II ranks 56th all-time in career points with 1,010.
• Cameron Brown added nine rebounds, six points, two assists, a steal and a block.
• Brown's 1,158 career points rank 40th all-time at Saint Joseph's, while his 196 three-pointers rank ninth, and 523 rebounds rank 45th.
• Greer III finished with nine points and a game-high five assists, to go with two steals and four rebounds. 
• Klaczek grabbed nine rebounds and had three points, and three blocked shots.
• Rasheer Fleming scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds, had two steals, a block and an assist.
• Christian Winborne added nine points.
• Charles Coleman finished with a rebound and an assist.
